Mountain Bike Madness

With all those boxes ticked, your next move is to decide which areas to explore by mountain bike, for much like its offerings in water sports, dining and hiking, biking in Tobago has multiple options. The common factor is the feeling of ultimate freedom that comes from cycling in paradisical conditions, despite the variations.

The landscape caters for all levels of cyclists; choose the gentle flatland journey around the Bon Accord Lagoon for beginners, or the slalom-like descents of the Main Ridge, the domain of experts. In almost every area of Tobago there are bike trails – often also used by jeeps – nearby.

The added beauty of exploring Tobago by bike is the access to secluded spots that offer unrestricted views of the island from little-known locations that otherwise may not be visited, with names like Tabancas, Greedy’s, Sweet Man Hill and Chocolate Cake. There are also ample opportunities for cooling off, with short rides to limpid freshwater pools fed by meandering rivers, or epic rides of 3 hours to the likes of Highland Falls, Tobago’s highest waterfall.

These journeys take the cyclists through villages only accessible by the same track they are riding on, creating the sense that this is a very different way to see Tobago, some would add, the best way to see Tobago. They provide new perspectives from which to see the famed Tobago sunset or the Caribbean coastline. Also, they allow cyclists to enjoy the benefits of their eco-endeavours with rewards like access to Big Bay, one the best beaches on the island, difficult to get to by car (but not by bike!), therefore it is often secluded. It’s the perfect bonus at the end of an enticing trek past all manner of flora, fauna and occasionally, wildlife.

Guides are crucial and companies like Tobago Mountain Bike Tours offer not only guides but the full package including bicycles of all levels (including full suspension with hydraulic brakes to take on the toughest trails), helmets, gloves and will suggest suitable routes dependent upon experience. Owner Eamon Healy-Singh’s mission is clear and not rooted solely upon tourism “I emphasize ecological practices from minimizing plastic waste to cleaning areas we frequent. I guarantee you will see, learn and enjoy the beautiful island of Tobago.” To that end, he provides details of the areas visited, from past Amerindian settlements to the species of snakes in the vicinity of the rainforest. Healy-Singh’s tours also include stops at the best local outlets for meals. (www.tobagomountainbike.com)
