Marissa Yung Lee

I am a self-taught artist best known for my oil portraits of Cultural and Traditional Mas performers. I am inspired by the meaningful connections and artistry of my subjects and from the continual challenges of the medium.

I work primarily in oil, with heavy concentration on value study, impressionistic colours and alla prima brush and knife work. I prefer to use light to define the form and to tell a story within a painting. The study of light has been at the forefront of my personal artistic journey and I love discovering the various ways light can create vastly different moods. In my portraits particularly, I strive toward the evocative, rather than the purely literal, to show restraint in details in order to create mystery and capture moments in time. I consider my style to be Contemporary Realism blended with Impressionism.

The best part of painting for me is the people I meet. Being able meet local cultural performers and learn the history and meaning of their art directly from the source is something that I consider an honour and a blessing. To form these wonderful connections, to tell someone’s story is a privilege and a responsibility that I take very seriously.

My work has been exhibited in the National Museum, The Art Society of Trinidad & Tobago, The Rotunda Gallery, Arnim’s Art Galleria, Horizons Art Gallery, Coco Vivo Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina, and in private collections locally and internationally.
