Year after year, Tobago Carnival continues to come into its own, with more attendees, more events and more energy. The Carnival started in 2022 on the heels of the Covid-19 pandemic, as a way to boost the economy and add a Tobago twist to the carnival marketplace. So far, it’s been a hot seller!
The small island is abuzz in the weeks leading up to the Carnival at the end of October. There are fetes, calypso competitions, and now “Pan Omega”, Tobago Carnival’s own Panorama competition the weekend before.

Then, Carnival weekend arrives – a splendour of colour and verve in the heart of Tobago’s capital, Scarborough. Tobago takes traditional J’Ouvert a step further with its focus on “mud mas”, in which locally excavated mud becomes a Carnival accessory. Saturday night kicks off with the “Steelpan and Powder Parade” then the “Night Mas” serves as a prequel to Sunday’s main event: the Parade of Bands, set against Tobago’s sparkling coastline.
The small scale of Tobago Carnival – compared to Trinidad and Tobago’s national Carnival and others around the world – sets it apart. There is a sense of intimacy and community to the Tobago Carnival experience, where partying in the streets co-exists with peaceful nature jaunts like beach tours.
And with the ocean so close to the festivities, it would be impossible not to take a dip – there are multiple cool-down events like boat rides, a beach hop, and a “Las’ lap” party at the award-winning Pigeon Point Beach. Here, you can enjoy that must-have sea bath, while savouring memories from being “on d’ road” in costume.
Tobago Carnival continues to attract attention from local promoters and companies. In 2025, Tobagonian artistes came together on a soca riddim produced in partnership with Tobago-based entertainment brand Jade Monkey. And you need not worry about FOMO (fear of missing out), because there were several entities documenting the experience for online viewers, like lifestyle/media brand Scorch and the Tobago Updates news platform.
What can we expect from Tobago Carnival 2026? An even better experience. Organisers say that the coordination and management of the Carnival will only get smoother. Local airlines have listened to the call to add extra Tobago flights to accommodate the growing interest. Yet even as it grows, Tobago Carnival is determined to stay true to its origins: showing the world a taste of Carnival that meets modern demands while preserving cultural traditions.

Tobago Carnival
October 30–November 1
Started in 2022, Tobago Carnival is the island’s unique take on “the greatest show on earth”, where people of all creeds and race come together in an annual celebration of freedom, culture and creativity. The event has grown from strength to strength since its inception, becoming more streamlined each year.
Now, Tobago Carnival centres around several main events occurring at the heart of the island’s capital, the sea-side city of Scarborough. From the muddy “Dutty J’Ouvert”, to the energetic street parades on Sunday, Tobago Carnival takes on a life of its own – where revelry and festivity co-exist with lush landscapes and natural beauty.
It’s a chance to don a colourful costume one day, then take a beach tour across the island the next. Who says you can’t have it all?
