The word “artisanal” is thrown around a lot these days, to the point where it is almost easy to forget its roots. Thought to be of either French or Italian origin, the word “artisan” simply refers to a skilled craftsperson, who makes or creates objects partly or entirely by hand. These objects can include, but are not limited to, jewelry, soaps, clothing, sculpture, and food.

Trinidad & Tobago is awash with talented craftspeople, who exhibit at various venues and markets throughout the country.

South Market, which, as its name suggests, originated in south Trinidad, has now expanded to hosting events all over the country. These include pop-up markets, workshops, and other community events. The organization also operates a store, Caribbean Collection, which offers artisans a space to showcase their products year-round. Visit southmarket868.com for information on their 2026 schedule.

UpMarket, Festival of Fabulous Foods and Finds, offers artisans and small businesses an affordable outlet to bring their craft to the public. Visit their facebook and Instagram pages for more information (upmarkettt).

The shopping high season begins a couple of months before Christmas with BITS and Pieces, generally held in early November. Founded by a group of artisans who produce all types of artwork, crafts and accessories, it’s the ideal spot to pick up your locally-made holiday gifts. Check out their facebook and Instagram (bitsandpiecestt) for further details.
