Open yourself up and let the universe in!
While many visitors flock to Trinidad for the nightlife, the excitement, the party and the pump, others choose a different path, the one that leads to a near-nirvanic state of peace, bliss and contentment. If that’s your vibe, there are many places in Trinidad where you can begin your search for serenity, using some of the world’s most ancient artforms.
In recent times, yoga and Brazilian jiu jitsu have become increasingly popular, so if either of those - or maybe both - appeal to you, you’ve come to the right place.
If you’re a local, you’ve probably already noticed that interest in these forms of relaxation and physical expression are trending. If that’s the case, we invite you to fall right in!
Yoga
Breathe in deep and channel your chi when you visit one of the many yoga studios dotted across the country. Some even offer outdoor sessions on patios or in parks. If you’re lucky, you may catch one under the huge full moon, an auspicious time to top up your energy and bring balance to your spirit.
If you have a few days to spare, why not try a retreat? They cater to both visitors and residents, individuals, couples and groups. There are a few hidden gems which offer signature experiences, complete with rustic residential cabins surrounded by the chirps of wild birds and the whisper of the wind in the trees. Have a lazy breakfast and a sip of local coffee before you immerse yourself in the healing green light of the forest as you’re led through soothing routines by qualified yoga masters.
At Grande Riviere Retreats you can enjoy quiet reflection time, receive one-on-one counselling, and learn practices that will help regulate your nervous system and ground your energy.
If you’re in Tobago, try Castara Retreats, where your wellness experience will be flavoured with the salty tang of a cooling sea breeze. After your yoga, tai-chi or meditation session, indulge in a massage and let luxurious essential oils heal you from the outside in.
At Hacienda Jacana in Talparo, you’ll also find charming cottages surrounded by lush greenery thrumming with wildlife…a birdwatcher’s paradise. The venue plays host to several yoga retreats and events, or you can go it on your own by finding a quiet spot to meditate, stretch, and ground yourself.
There are many havens in Trinidad and Tobago where you can open your mind, body and spirit as you feel the stress leak out of you. We invite you to find wholeness once again.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
If you’re in the mood for a more vibrant experience, maybe Brazilian jiu jitsu will get your blood racing and up your energy levels to eleven. You’ll find several martial arts clubs and schools across the island, and they’re all eager to welcome fellow practitioners from around the world…as well as home-grown seekers of knowledge of the arts.
Among the better-known jiu jitsu dojos are Island Porrada, Gracie Jiu Jitsu Trinidad and Tobago – Team Pedro Sauer, Trinidad and Tobago Budokai, and Elite 101.
Martial artists are always excited about the chance to pass on their skills and knowledge to upcoming generations, so most of them welcome children and even offer special training sessions for younger ones.
If you’re eager for a longer-term experience, the Rolling in Tobago Retreat is just one opportunity to practice with other afficionados, while also taking time off to explore the island and enjoy a swim or meal in their company.
Looking for something different?
Of course, we’re well aware that there are many more artforms and practices that might strike your fancy, and for each of these there are holistic centres, dojos, and studios that will suit your taste.
A quick search will lead you to oases of calm where you can centre yourself with tai-chi, qigong or Pilates. If bursts of energy are what you prefer, you’ll be welcomed with open arms for a session of karate, taekwondo, aikido, and a host of mixed martial arts.
One thing is for certain: if you’re seeking a path to renewed wellness, purified energy and a return to a sense of calm, Trinidad and Tobago is the place to find it.
