Don’t Vacation Staycation!

Trinis love to explore, but demands on our time, the cost of overseas travel and restrictions on forex have made foreign travel less accessible to many. Not a problem! Trinidad and Tobago has always been a legendary tourist destination, in high demand by discerning visitors who flock here to make the most of the delightful experiences we offer. And if they can enjoy their sojourns, so can you. Allow us to make a suggestion: Try a staycation instead. We have two popular destinations in mind: “Down De Islands” and Mayaro.

Down De Islands

Five major Bocas islands lie off the northwest coast of Trinidad: Chacachacare, Monos, Huevos, Gaspar Grande and Centipede Island. If you’re headed there you’re going “Down De Islands” or DDI.

The islands have a varied and occasionally unsettling history, especially Chacachacare, home to a former leprosarium, and Carrera, which was until recently a maximum security prison.

These days they’re thronging with day trippers, weekenders and a handful of long-term residents. Some go to relax, soak in the sun and sip drinks by the beaches…while others let loose at small private parties or splash-out events organised by major promoters.

Popular areas can therefore be humming with activity on weekends but are more serene during the week. If you’re active but not into partying, there are tour guides who will lead you on cave adventures, hikes or fishing expeditions.

While some visitors use their private boats, others gain access via water taxi or chartered yachts at reasonable prices. Small supermarkets, bars and variety stores are within reach on the mainland, but it’s also a good idea to pack your supplies for that sense of security.

Houses are available to rent either directly from the owners or through sites like Airbnb.

Mayaro Dreamin’

Once a sleepy coastal village where rivers trickled into the sea and fishermen could be seen casting their nets before dawn, Mayaro has been transformed into a coastal hub thanks to increased activity in the energy sector. Expanded exploration and monetisation of offshore resources has led to the town’s rapid growth, and with it, its surging reputation as a vacation spot.

The majestic Atlantic stretches endlessly out, begging you to spend all day on its shores sunning yourself, swimming, or digging for tasty “chip chip” molluscs in the sand. Swamp and river tours are great for day trips, while at night you have the choice of strolling along the beach rebalancing your zen or heading to the clubs to dance the night away.

A few small hotels are available, as well as private rentals that range from the simple and homey to the palatial, complete with pools and housekeeper service. As before, sites like Airbnb are a good place to begin searching for accommodation.

So there you have it, a solid case for choosing a staycation when you have time off. It’s your chance to reconnect with your people, revisit places you may not have seen since childhood, and truly find yourself again.
